This extraordinary prehistoric evergreen, whose lineage dates back more than 200 million years, is native to the mountains of Chile and Argentina. Its architectural branches are densely covered with sharply pointed, triangular, deep green leaves, giving young plants an unmistakable sculptural appearance. Slow growing but eventually magnificent, mature specimens can exceed 50' and should be given room to develop. Grow in full sun to light shade in moist but well-drained soil, sheltered from drying winter winds. The Monkey Puzzle is endangered in its native habitat, making every cultivated specimen a small connection to an ancient flora. A true living fossil—and a plant with a story. Zone 7.
